#3: Lemon Juice. Acidic Outside, Alkaline Inside

Lemon juice is acidic, no debate there. But here’s the twist: once metabolised, lemon juice actually has an alkalising effect on your body’s internal environment.

How does that work?

The citric acid in lemons breaks down during digestion into alkaline minerals like potassium and magnesium. These minerals help buffer acidity and support your body’s natural pH balance, the delicate scale that keeps your cells and organs functioning optimally.

Your Body’s Brilliant pH Regulation

Your body maintains a tightly controlled pH level, especially in the blood (around 7.35-7.45). This balance is critical because enzymes, hormones, and cellular processes rely on stable acidity levels to work properly.

Rather than trying to “alkalise” your body with trendy drinks or extreme diets, what really matters is supporting your body’s natural rhythms:

  • Eat mineral-rich foods (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds) that provide natural buffers

  • Move your body regularly to encourage circulation and cellular health

  • Manage stress to avoid acid buildup from cortisol and inflammation

Why Lemon Water Works

Adding a squeeze of lemon to your water is a simple, effective way to support hydration and cellular function. It’s a natural source of:

  • Electrolytes that help balance fluids in and out of cells

  • Vitamin C, which supports immune function and skin health

  • Flavonoids and antioxidants, which protect cells from oxidative stress

All without the need for expensive “functional beverages” or gimmicks.

Bottom Line

Lemon juice may taste sour and acidic, but inside your body, it becomes a gentle ally in maintaining balance. Next time you hydrate, try a splash of lemon. Simplify to amplify.
